The Motorola MVME331 VMEbus Intelligent Communications Controller (ICC) supports six asynchronous serial communication channels at a maximum simultaneous speed of 9600 Baud full duplex. The module contains a complete 16-bit microcomputer consisting of an MC68010 MPU, 128KB (optionally 512KB) RAM and firmware in 32KB ROM. This microcomputer controls three Z8530 Serial Communication Devices, pre-processes and transfers data between the VME system memory and the serial ports.

The transfer of commands, status messages and data packets is performed through a pipeline structure in the VME memory system, which is shared between the operation system and the MVME331 firmware. This transfer follows the Buffered Pipe Protocol (BPP), a Motorola standard for processor to processor communication. MVME331 drivers are available for VERSAdos and UNIX SYSTEM V/68.

Each of the six serial channels can be configured to conform to the RS232C or RS422B standard. This is implemented on a separate board, the MVME705A, 6-Channel Serial Transceiver Module, which is connected via ribbon cable with the lower rear connector of the MVME331 module.
